Why Engine Care Products are Essential for Your Car's Longevity

Ask any car service technician whether Engine Care Products are good for your car and the majority of them will say yes. There are some products on the market that are less effective than others, but in general, engine additives can certainly help your engine perform better and last longer. There are different kinds of additives and engine care products, depending on the type of vehicle you drive. Let’s take a quick look at what they are, what they do, and why you should think about using them in your car.

What are engine care products?

Engine care products can range from a bucket of hot, soapy water to an engine flush product that you add to your engine oil. We are primarily concerned with the internal workings of your engine at this point, so we’ll take it as read that you already have the outside of the engine sorted with a good clean-down occasionally!

The inside of your engine is a highly stressed environment where metal rubs against metal. That’s why it is so important to make sure that your engine is properly lubricated, and that it always has plenty of engine oil of the correct grade in it. However, over time, your engine still produces an amount of contaminants that will reduce the efficiency of the oil, and increase engine wear.

Engine car products are additives you pour into your oil to increase its lubrication efficiency. The type of additives you put into your engine will depend on whether it is a petrol or a diesel engine. Rule number one: always make sure you’re buying the right engine additive for your car. Your engine won’t respond very well if you put in an additive meant for a diesel engine and your car has a petrol engine.

What do engine cleaners do?

Every so often, it is a good idea to flush your engine through to remove contaminants. This is done by adding an engine flush additive, running the engine for a while, and then draining the old oil and the engine flush and replacing it with fresh, clean oil.

This process removes microscopic flecks of carbon that are left behind as a residue from the detonation process within the engine’s cylinders. Over time, this carbon builds up and can start to affect the smooth running of your car. An engine flush removes these particles and not only improves performance but can also reduce emissions, making an engine flush or engine clean an eco-friendly thing to do.

When you carry out an engine flush (or you ask your garage or service center to do it for you), make sure that the oil filter is also replaced to stop any trapped contaminants from re-entering the system.

How often should you do an engine flush?

This isn’t something that you need to do every month. In fact, most manufacturers recommend an engine flush every six to 12 months, depending on your mileage. It’s easy to tie it in with your regular oil change, or you can ask your service center to include an engine flush as part of your interim or major service.

Do additives help your engine run better?

There are some Car Care Products available that claim to improve the performance of your engine that are not engine cleaners. In many cases, these do little to benefit the running of the engine and although they won’t usually do any harm, in many cases they are not necessary. As long as you regularly check and change your engine oil, there is little need for any extra additives.
